It is made with 1/4 inch purple heart for the bikes and 1/4 hard maple for the base. This one has a clock, however, it can be done with a thermometer as well. I made this with 1/2 inch walnut but it can be made with many other types of wood, such as yellow heart, peruvian walnut, or hard maple. It can also be made with 1/4 inch wood.
